Finding your WHY…

Why do you want to own a small business? Whether you have already started your business or you are just dreaming, finding your why is so important! It keeps you motivated and committed to following your dream. Your why is your own personal definition of success.

There are so many reasons to start your own business. Spending more time with your family, not having to report to anyone, following your passion, helping people, whatever it might be! Everyone has different reasons. Most of the time they are centered around freedom and being in control of your own life, which is amazing!

When you are searching for your why, make sure it is something you are passionate about. You want it to be something that drives you, and that keeps you going when things get difficult. When we first start a business, we are so motivated and LOVE every minute, for the most part:) Eventually, there will be a day that is hard to get out of bed, times that are financially difficult, or days that it is hard to juggle all the things. Those are the days that it is so important to remember your why, remember why you are working so hard. It makes it all worth it in the end. We may still want to stay under the covers, but hopefully our why will make us eventually get out of bed 🙂

When you are passionate about something, it makes others want to jump on board too. That is what we all need when jumping into entrepreneurship. We all need our tribe, and when we are passionate and have a real WHY for spending on all of our time and energy on this crazy business idea. It makes it easier for others to support us. I hear so many people tell me when starting a business that their family or friends just don’t understand what they are doing and why don’t they get a real job.. ect.. Being passionate about your why at least can help you explain, not that you owe anyone an explanation 🙂

So.. now we know it is important to have a WHY, how in the heck do we figure out what our why is??  Some good things to ask yourself are:

  1. What brings you joy?
  2. What are you willing to struggle for?
  3. When you are most productive, what motivates you?
  4. Why do you do what you do?
  5. What does real success look like to you?
  6. What do you hate about your current job, or career?

Taking a step back to take some time to find out your real WHY will help you move forward in your business. It may not make a difference today, but having a clear path of why you are working so hard and doing what you do helps to keep you going in all the craziness that is owning a business 🙂
